Regularly Usui's Technique is to deflect the opponent's weapon with the round counterweight at the end of his spear (a) and then counter-attack while the opponent is off guard. However when the counterweight breaks he switches to the technique passed down from his homeland...

Ryukyu: This is the fighting style involving the timbey (tortise shell shield) and louchin (spearhead) (b). It involves three steps:

1. He deflects the enemy's weapon using the roundness of the timbey. (c)

2. At the same time he moves the shield so it is in front of his opponent's face, (d) blocking his vision so he can't see where the blade will come from.

3.He then stabs the guy with his louchin (e) and retreats.

(As a side note, I'm pretty sure that when Usui says Ryukyu, he's referring to his homeland, which is the Ryukyu Islands south of Japan. But I needed a name for Usui's fighting style and Ryukyu seems appropriate.)

("Heart's Eye" or "Eye of the Heart")

Shingan is basically the way Usui can still "see" even though he's blind. You see, after being blinded by Shishio and abandoned by the Shogunate, Usui became lost in the mountains. Eventually he collapsed, powerless, and his heart stopped. However, due to his strong will to live, his heart began beating again. And by visiting death and returning, he brought back with him a superhuman sense of hearing. Using this he can tell people's emotions by the rate of their heartbeat, the friction of bones and expantion and constration of mucles shows him how they are attacking. It's kinda like the superhuman hearing of Daredevil from Marvel Comics.

Usui rapidly attacks with both the blade at the head and the counterweight at the base of the spear, so rapidly in fact that it seems likes he's striking several times at once.
